Hello, and sorry for missing the last two weeks. I’ve been traveling, first to visit family, and then on a content retreat in New York City.

Now I’m back!

This is the hero video for this year’s Festival of Legends. I love this event.

The goal for this video was to highlight the people (and characters) that make the event special. It was about letting the attendees relive the magic, and about getting new viewers excited to meet the characters next year.

Last week I went to New York

New York City is known for a lot of things. The Gateway to the New World. A hub for modern media and bright LEDs. World-class arts and theater. Major financial center.

Everyone in New York is on a mission. Everyone is pursuing something.

Being around that energy last week put me in a different place mentally. I felt more motivated to create, and more ambitious to make an impact.

It got me thinking…

There’s this thing that happens when we stay in one place for so long. We can start feeling stuck, in a rut, unmotivated, like nothing is changing. It’s a universal feeling I’m sure we’ve all felt.

But it’s especially detrimental to the creative process.

Creativity thrives on novelty, ambition, and hope. The idea that something new could be brought into the world. That something could be created and have an impact.

When we don’t give ourselves the space to experience novelty, to drive ambition, or to feel hope, we stifle our creative drive. If nothing is changing, or we don’t feel capable of change, we can’t create. Because creating, by definition, causes change.

This is why writing retreats are so commonplace.

Getting out of town and putting yourself in a totally different environment gives you the space to think about how things could be, and are, different. And that inspires creativity.

This is what I experienced on my trip to New York. Here in North Carolina, it’s easy for me to get into the habit of just living my life. But going somewhere new reminds me that there’s a whole world out there that’s different, and they’re also waiting for something new and different to experience.

They’re waiting for me to create something.
