Good afternoon!
Here’s something I’ve been thinking about this week.
Featured Video
I made this video for the Festival of Legends. I wanted to share it here, because I think it’s a good example of how video content can make you feel like you’re there. It can make you feel like you’re having a real experience.
Watch the whole thing and let yourself get immersed in it, if able.
This week’s insight
On Monday I watched a video that mentioned set design for YouTube. I then spent the entire afternoon rearranging furniture, finding new places for old mementos, and getting the vibes just right in my studio.
The impromptu exercise gave me an appreciation for space/interior design in three areas that I think are relevant to YouTube and the creative process:
Set Design
The catalyst. I am not a set or production designer, but I feel like I leveled up. I gained the insight that your set, or what’s in the background of your videos, should all have intention. It should speak about who you are, what you do, and what you find value in. With my new set, I chose to communicate creativity, calm, and professionalism.Utility
I had been thinking of this for a while. I normally have all my cameras and microphones in a case, stashed somewhere in the closet. Every time I’m going to use a camera, it takes me minutes to just get the right piece of equipment out. Designing my space so that my cameras and mics are always there, ready to use, has been a game changer. Now if I want to use a camera, I just grab it. It’s greatly lowered the friction involved with creative work.Vibes
Maybe you think about this, maybe you don’t. But I didn’t much before this. Don’t underestimate the importance of how a space feels for creative work. My studio used to feel darker, more crowded, and somewhat chaotic. It had function, but it lacked form. I changed that. From the placement of the bookcase and guitars, to the lights and colors, I wanted a space that felt creative and calm. Where I could find respite from the chaos of networking and going on shoots.
Having this new space has already made me feel more creative and more open to creating art again, which is something I haven’t felt like I’ve done in a while. I’m really excited about this new space.
What’s your creative space like?
