Happy Friday,
I forgot to put it on my calendar to write this issue today, so getting it out a little later than I’d like.
Featured Video
If money wasn’t an issue, I’d travel the world and make videos about magic in everyday moments. This video is an ode to that, and to introduce my travel YouTube channel.
The world is magical. Explore it.
This week’s insight
Casey Neistat gets asked how he makes such interesting videos. His response is to “do interesting things.”
This is the hardest thing about making videos for the internet (YouTube), and I’ve been thinking a lot about it this week. It’s why everyone talks about the importance of the topic, or idea, of a video. Interesting ideas are the ones that win on YouTube.
Interesting can mean a few different things. But the simplest way to put it is to make videos that 1) greatly appeal to people and 2) they can’t get them anywhere else.
If you’re a video creator, the easiest way to make an interesting video is to do an interesting thing. So what interesting thing can you go do for your next video?
Conversation I enjoyed
Domino Ireland is an adventurer who knows how to live life. He’s hiked the Appalachian Trail, climbed Kilimanjaro, crashed a motorcycle in Morocco, and is now on a mission to visit 60 countries before the age of 60.
He’s also an old friend I got a chance to catch up with today. And I got to benefit from what he does best:
Inspire adventure in people.
Adventure is also core to the creative process. Experiencing new things outside of our norm is a requirement. How else would you get new ideas?
The phrase “steal like an artist” alludes to this. Adventure and new experiences put us in front of others’ perspectives and let us capture what we like, so that we can include it into our own work.
This is also why my favorite YouTube channels are all adventure channels.
When was the last time you had an adventure, by the way? When was the last time you went out of your comfort zone?
If you could use some adventure, check out Domino’s website for inspiration.
